Accidents Happen
September 27th, 2007
And sometimes they’re not even my fault. I’m leaving work yesterday, navigating my way out of the parking garage. I come around a corner and see a Jeep Liberty coming the opposite direction. I stop as far on my side of the “through way” as possible so this girl can go around the corner past me. But no, she keeps driving straight. I’m stopped and I had just enough time to think “Surely she is going to slow down so she can go around me.” Then, bang. Right into me. Smashed my driver side headlight. Dented up my hood. Bent my bumper and swapped paint.
My reaction as we get out of our cars, is “It happens.” To which she replies, “No it doesn’t! This is my first accident, my parents are going to kill me!” Nice, my first accident was when I was 16, and I hit a parked car. Other minor traffic incidents have ensued, it’s never as bad as you think it is at first. And life always carries on. I assure her that her parents are not going to kill her. No one is injured. We’re not really sure what to do, it was an accident, it’s a tight fit around those corners in the garage. We exchange contact and insurance information and decide that we’ll both call our insurance companies and let them figure it out.
I call my insurance company, report the accident. I explain what happened, they set me up with an appointment to get an estimate and tell me they’ll contact her insurance company. They ask me who was at fault, I told them, “I was stopped, how much more can I do to prevent an accident?” Her insurance company calls, I tell them what happened.
I have this shitty feeling the insurance companies are going to make me pay for my own repairs, feed me some horse crap about it being a no fault accident in a parking garage because there were no ‘lanes’ or signs of any sort. I’m bitter. Seriously, I stopped, how much more can I do to prevent an accident?
